TRANSCRIPT OF Q & A
QUESTION by Marielena Stuart:
Yes, good afternoon. My name is Marielena Stuart, I’m a Republican Candidate for the U.S. Senate here in Florida. I am very concerned along with the people that I meet across the State of Florida about Sharia law– and what the present administration is doing to appease Islamic and Islamic extremists, so that they will not feel that there is any blasphemy being committed through our First Amendment rights. Do you have any opinion or information concerning this very, very critical matter, which affects our First Amendment rights.
ANSWER by Dr. Walid Phares:
Absolutely, this is a critical issue. And I know that Frank Gaffney spoke before me. He may have covered [pause] he is one of the experts and has many experts and I hope that you [the moderator] are going to invite some of them to the future calls. What I would say from a strategic perspective, is that in the Sharia business issue, the most concerning to me is not the actual Sharia document. What is concerning to me are the networks that are using it. And those networks have now obtained, politically speaking, a “protection” – quote unquote–from this administration, claiming that the Islamists are not the threat. That the move that is pushing towards Sharia is not the threat. And therefore, those Islamists networks—and I use the term Islamists, to be very careful here, I don’t use Muslim community, I use Islamists—this is an ideological, political movement, I’ll be happy to explain at another opportunity—those networks that have fronts, that have NGOs, have groups, have lobbies, are using the fact that they are here to spread Sharia—in fact to create a mobilization inside their communities, and inside the United States, to create political influence—and that political influence is going to have an impact—first, on our homeland security, meaning, if we disable ourselves as national security from detecting the ideology that is manufacturing and creating the Jihadists, we are going to have not one, maybe dozens of Major Hasans of Fort Hood. Meaning, what radicalizes those individuals is Islamist networks unleashed, not checked, doing whatever they want and protecting the spread of the ideology. That concerns me on the inside.
On the outside, those same networks are going to be influencing our foreign policy– are going to actually be influencing the United States policy with regard the Arab Spring, with regard the Muslim Brotherhood, with regard Iran. They are already influencing it. There are a lot of pieces, and I will be very happy to send you [to the moderator] a few by e-mail, stating clearly that there are advisors and experts for this administration, this is not something new, this is something now even available online—who have been influencing the policies of the United States government, with regard, engaging with and partnering with the Muslim Brotherhood. These are not guesses. These are realities—it’s even in the Arab media. I mean, that will be the clearest possible. So, this influence that the Islamists have in the United States is an issue—and it should be an issue raised in the debate, including in this very hot presidential contest this year.
